It’s important to understand how to safely and effectively stay active in the summer months. This week we will be sharing a few of our Summertime Tips from Liz, our fitness manager. Liz’s third tip is: BE SAFE IN THE SUN UV radiation is part of the electromagnetic (light) spectrum that reaches the earth from the sun. UVA accounts for up to 95 percent of the UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. UVA rays are less intense than UVB, but are 30 to 50 times more prevalent. UVB rays are the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn. The most significant amount of UVB hits the U.S. between 10 AM and 4 PM from April to October. Both UVA and UVB, however, penetrate the atmosphere and plan an important role in conditions such as premature skin aging, eye damage (including cataracts), and skin cancers. They also suppress the immune system, reducing your ability to fight off these and other maladies. Follow these guidelines to help decrease your exposure to harmful UV rays: Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV blocking sunglasses. Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day. Apply a golf ball size (2 tablespoons) amount of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.
