It’s rare these days to see a book work on even two levels. When it works on three or four, as The Girl God does, it’s not only incredible, it’s a true joy. The confusion a young child has in this world -- something we all, female OR male, can relate to – is our stepping off point and draws us in immediately. Helani’s questions – very much those of a young girl today – are those that many of us wished we had asked, but never dared to. So right away we’re ready to go on this quest with our young hero… And Helani takes us into a world we have never seen before. The illustrations draw us further and further into our journey because you can’t just glance at them. You have to slow down, look carefully, and really examine this strange place. At first it’s kinda scary -- things are not as you’re used to -- but as you go deeper and deeper you find out it’s not. Yeah it’s weird, but so’s the real world, and this place is weird in a good way. It’s bright, and colorful, and all who live here are peaceful and happy… and it’s a place you really like and really want to be… And from that place come voices, some ancient, some new, but something tells you that every one of them comes from a true, deeply moving, and deeply spiritual origin. So you listen. And while the voices don’t necessarily lead you to answers, they do lead you to more questions. And suddenly you remember. Questions are all right, questions are good… questions are why you were put on this earth. And these are voices that any compassionate parent or relative would want their young child to hear… For they only wish they had asked these same questions in days gone by. The Girl God is not a book for just now, it’s also a book for our future. Let us all pray that it becomes a best-selling classic, because -- if it does -- it means our world and our planet will survive.
