It’s so refreshing to hear a senator talk about a technological/scientific subject and get his facts RIGHT. Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) talks about why net neutrality is such an important issue, and why President Obama’s comments that he will reclassify the Intenet as a regulated utility is the right approach. [I just wish the YouTube clip below weren’t cut off early and he could complete his final thought.] There are a lot of liberal and conservative blogs where the issue is not well understood, and discussion has broken down into a partisan slug get. The “regulated utility” aspects are blown way out of proportion, especially by conservatives, though to their credit I’ve read comments from a lot of conservative folks who get it and side with Obama. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) commented that net neutrality would be “Obamacare for the Internet.” Franken correctly points out why that is a ridiculous notion — the Internet is not currently broken (for the most part, though Comcast & Time Warner have gone in some disturbing directions). Making the Internet a utility preserves the free market that exists now. Obamacare was government regulation put in place to fix a healthcare system that had become increasingly predatory and antagonistic to true financial and medical health for our citizens. Very different things. Worth watching… Four minutes well-spent if you’re still not sure what the issue of net neutrality is all about.
