It’s time for another Civil War note from this week in the Illinois 105th. On September 2, 1864, the 105th was one of the units involved in the fall of Atlanta that began Sherman’s March to the Sea. In a letter to his wife back home, Sycamore’s own E.F. Dutton wrote of that day: “Post Hd. Qrs. are in tents made out of covers of Wagons. There are stacks of Commissary stores & ordnance stores here, forage &c. Heavy cannonading was heard all night in direction of Atlanta. It was beyond the city though. There were some large fires in that direction too. The sky was lit up brightly. Quite a strong reconnaissance has gone out from here today to see what is in & around Atlanta. Some of our men who were in the City escaped yesterday and came in our lines. They report that there are very few troops there and that Sherman is using old Hood pretty roughly.” His observations bring back shades of Gone with the Wind!
