It’s wet. It wriggles. What is it doing in your mouth? Your tongue is a miraculous thing. It moves food around in your mouth. It gets rid of things you don’t want. It checks, by taste, if food is safe or not and, perhaps most miraculously of all, it shapes the sounds of speech. This is why the words “language” and “tongue” are interchangeable. It’s working so hard for you every day. Do you give it a second’s thought? Do you even know what it’s doing? Come and meet your tongue. Learn how to “see” it in your mouth, watch it while it works and then learn how to compare what your tongue does in your first language and compare and contrast that with what the tongue does in English (RP). You will learn; how to accurately “see” what your tongue does in speech how to place your tongue where it needs to be to accurately create the sounds of English (RP) how to move accurately from what your tongue does habitually to what it must do in your target accent How the tongue shapes the vowels of English (RP) how the tongue creates the consonants of English (RP) how to mirror and model new sounds by using your new awareness of the movements and placement of your tongue The subtlest, tiniest changes in the posture and position of the tongue can make dramatic differences to the sound that comes out of your mouth! This learning will definitely take one lesson, possibly the next one too!
