It’s wrong that anyone in a wealthy, sophisticated nation such as ours should be so cold that they die. The 51,764 winter deaths in 2013/2014 is not acceptable ... vote out those responsible. Whoever owns utility companies the long-term trend of rising global demand for gas and coal would mean high prices. That’s how the real world works. Nationalisation is an irrelevant distraction. The real issue is how we can keep prices as low as sensibly possible and thus people as warm as they need to be. Much can still be done. Enough is enough. Delving deep into the figures in a report this summer by the Department for Energy and Climate Change shows that we will be spending twice as much on green levies and other such nonsense by 2020. They’ll add £129 to the average gas and electricity bill. Even now £60 of a typical bill goes towards funding wind farms and other forms of “green” energy. That’s bonkers. There’s another villain in this piece: Ed Miliband. Labour’s pledge to freeze energy prices was announced by the party leader with great fanfare and for a few days it seemed like a political masterstroke. In the cold light of day, however, it’s a catastrophically stupid idea.
