Ivan Semesyuk, visual artist. Kyiv, Ukraine. Jan 2014. Left-right politics and revolt in Ukrainian. Events in Ukraine are brimming with interesting phenomena and varieties of know-how. One of the most distinct features is the delicacy of the protest towards private property and human dignity. Currently only one boutique occupying the struggle area was a casualty and none of the “disciplinary” servicemen have been humiliated. Furthermore a few storefronts suspected to be run by mafia were stomped over in the city of Lviv. All the while, protesters were killed, tortured, kidnapped, their private property and estates destroyed and their dignity - denigrated. Unbelievable isnt it? This is especially surprising to Europeans who are quite familiar with vandalistic nature of protests, blazing cars and stores, smashed storefronts and clobbered police. I should also mention that everything that was set on fire or shattered during this time throughout the country in one way or another is related to criminal government authorities, all private property of the citizens is intact. For the most part European street riots that include fires and ruin of private property have a socio-anarchistic hue with corresponding jingles. Frankly it’s plain devastation, left-wing eradication to call a spade a spade. It’s an old European tradition that can only occur in a society that had not historically experienced the dim dread enhanced to perfection, a calamitous communist experiment called “Mature Socialism”. This is why Ukrainian protest hardly has any features of socialism, but rather it’s national by political definition. Some western observers search the crowd for any elements of neo-Nazism with a comic yet understandable dread. A number of Ukrainians find it amusing. Upon seeing that the core strength of the revolt lies amidst the “Right Sector” movement and football hooligans, immediately they envision petrifying SS soldiers on black mounts of Nazism. Meantime left-wing politicians yet again proved their eerie obscurity being only capable of organizing round table negotiations. However when there was an actual need in physical protection of citizens from corrupt law enforcements they demonstrated complete administrative impotency; they were simply absent. Such are the circumstances of the riot in Ukraine not only it is social but essentially patriotic; not to mention that it bears no ethnic emphasis. Those of you who are certain that Ukraine is beset by Nazis I encourage you to tell that story to my Jewish friends who provide sandwiches and hot tea to the barricades for the “Right Sector” units, help with transportation and firewood, contribute money to buy warm cloths and throw Molotov cocktails at corrupt policemen beside them. One of my comrades a typical local Jew commented on his experience: - Lately I’ve met many wonderful gentlemen at the barricades, remarkably they all turned out to be “fascists” and “Nazis” My other friend of Jewish descent actively participating in the protest recently started announcing slogan “Glory to the Nation!” with utter pride. Why? Each person, regardless of origins and nationalities feels as a member of a unified team or political community; as comrades in arms that are capable of uprising against oppression and ridding from remaining soviet chains of socialist irresponsibility and ignorance. Considering the unique shapes of protest that are being forged In Ukraine and emergence of a brand-new conscientious multi-million society, we can affirm that using terms like Left-wing or Right-wing Politics to characterize the matter would appear obsolete. Due to powerful civil hatred of previous socialist experience people engage in a dire conflict with the State and define themselves as the “Right Sector”, but realistically it’s the ”Sector of Civilian Dignity and Human Right to Freedom.” I repeat, everybody: Ukrainian, Jews, Russians, Armenians, Moldovans, Belarusians struggle to liberate themselves from Kremlins’ post-soviet influence and for their civilian privacy as citizens of Ukraine. Individually being political units units of a country we refer to ourselves as Ukrainians. Therefore we request not to use archaic clichés or senile political patterns in reference to us. We are a Nation! Because of such old habits you might have been unnerved by the infamous picture of a young protester fighting the police while holding a wooden shield with a swastika symbol painted on it. Let me clarify, forbid a teenager to depict swastika and he will draw it immediately even if he has to attend the synagogue with his parents the same morning, it’s a form of protest against an established system. Disobedience is a consequence of liberty.
