Ive always asked myself does the anxiety make the SPD worse or the SPD makes the anxiety worse.... Ive mentioned this before but I thought I would mention it again. Anxiety is actually based around your physical symptoms. The symptoms you feel from your interoceptive sense. The pounding heart beat, the dizzy faint feeling, the feeling you will pea yourself, the not being able to breath and the shaking. We with SPD are super sensitive so these feelings are much more intense for us then a person who does not have SPD. So as soon as we feel these sensations, we think uh-OH! Here comes the anxiety again but really its just a physical symptom we are afraid of as we are sensitive. If you can get your body used to the sensations you feel while having anxiety.... the easier it gets. For example if you do 30 jumping jacks before you attempt a situation that makes you anxious.... when you do what you need to do you wont get a raising heartbeat. Known fact. Breath through a straw and restrict some air to get used to the I cant breath I am having a panic attack feeling.... when you actually have a panic attack that feeling wont be as intense and youll get used to it and your body will stop telling you uhOH I am not going to be able to breath as you will get used to the sensation. Also its not good to flood yourself with exposure all at once.... but repetitive actions doing the same things over and over giving yourself more and more exposure to the things that cause you anxiety.... the less and less you will get anxiety. You are just supposed to do it small goals at a time until you are able to totally achieve total exposure to what causes you anxiety. Known facts. I wanted to share as I know this stuff works. Ive just learned all of this in my anxiety groups.Challenging your anxiety negative thoughts.... the uhOH thoughts.... Is SO important. This is where I struggle. When you are having anxiety and telling yourself omg everyone is going to know I have anxiety.... tell yourself.... No one has never noticed before. No one ever really does. The OMG I am going to faint.... truth be told you cant actually faint from panic attack or anxiety. OMG I am going to have a heart attack.... truth is you havent yet... tell yourself you wont. The more you challenge the anxiety negative thoughts you are having and replace them with positive good thoughts the easier it will be on you or your kiddos. The thoughts lead to the physical symptoms.
