Ive always felt, being an emcee, that there are 3 main components you must consider before achieving a respectable following. 1. Writing Technique (format, punchlines, intricate rhyme scheme patterns, compound syllable rhyming, etc.) 2. Message (relatable subject matter, over all point youre trying to convey, what exactly it is you are saying.) 3. Style (Cadence, rythm, making it catchy, HOW youre saying what youre saying.) Now think of all of the proclaimed greats and imagine a circle graph cut into 3 separations. Any emcee who has been on the cover of any credible magazine such as Rolling Stones most likely has a CLOSE TO perfect balance (33.3/33.3/33.3) of all three traits. Now some listeners prefer lyricism; some message; and others, turning up. Other great artists that dont fit this description often compensate for whichever area theyre lacking in by being exceptional in other areas. Personal examples: DOOM = approx. 60% technique; 20% message; 20% style Mos Def = approx. 50% message; 30% technique; 20% style Chief Keef = 80% style; 5% message; 15% technique Most favorites such as Em, Nas, Ye, Hov, BIG, Pac, Kendrick, 50, and even Wayne have figured out a way to effectively appeal to most audiences . And other artists (tech n9ne, pharoahe monch, soulja boy, etc.) usually gain almost a cult following for whatever their expertise may be. This is where most debates get confusing. ANY emcee can be compared to the next as long as they both rhyme over a beat. However, there must be a defining subject in any debate. When youre talking sports, you rarely compare Kobe to Vick; unless the subject is athletes in trouble haha. They both play sports; but two completely different ball games. But if you were to ask whos the better athelete over-all, opinions of which sport is prefered would eventually surface. Anywho, youll never come to an agreement in any debate without a set topic. Whos better at what? rather than whos better? Without discerning whos better at what, it will ALWAYS only boil down to personal opinion and no one will reach agreement or persuasion.
