Ive always hated the New York Yankees with plenty of passion. However, you have to be a special kind of a**hole to not like and respect Derek Jeter. Dude has held himself to a higher standard his entire career, both on and off the field. If I had a kid who played ball, Id want him to look up to a man like Jeter. Your team may have played against him. Your team may have been destroyed by him. Maybe he showed his super powers against your team in a way you didnt think possible (see: 2001 ALDS Game 3 vs the Oakland Athletics - The play against Giambi). One thing is certain though....you respect him as much as his own fans do. You love watching him, not only because you never know what youre going to get, but because professional sports are saturated with impurity, scandals, profiteers, and scumbags. Yet, Jeter stands above them all. He loves the sport of baseball. He loves his fans as much as they love him. He plays the game the way it is supposed to be played. Hats off to you sir! Youve had a helluva run and I dont care what they say, right along with the rest of us, Boston fans will forever miss seeing you own that spot between second and third base!
