Ive always wondered how in heck China orders (eg eBay orders) can - TopicsExpress

Ive always wondered how in heck China orders (eg eBay orders) can be posted free for an item, even if that item is only 99c. Well, I finally got a bit of a lead on it, when a friend mentioned that the items are delivered free once they hit Australia shores. So does that mean our Australia Post is delivering all of those internationally purchased, very cheap products, for zip?! I looked it up, and found a bit of information about what is called International Postage Agreement between most countries. This is where the sender just pays for the postage on their side of delivery. In other words, China might sell something for 99c with free postage offered. The postage might cost 4c of that 99c in their country. Then the Australia Post people bring it to us for nothing on this side. (So how can that make economical sense to us on this side of the deal?) My take on this info, is that the more stuff brought in by us for free postage is only going to drive up Australian postage to cover the higher turnover of mail being delivered. At the moment, as soon as a letter goes thicker than 20mm it is about $6.95 to post, plus the envelope, packing etc. So even if you purchase something that is only $2 worth, if its chubby, its gonna cost you heaps to have it sent (but free if coming from China !??). I think its really sad that our countrys sellers are struggling against international sellers who charge nothing for postage - I cant see how that helps our country. Of course, I understand that we all need to save our $$ where we can, but I just ask you to think about it, and at least be knowledgeable on how/why/where the free postage affects everybody in the long run! This is, like I said, my take on things, and I would love to know if anybody out there has the true details, facts and figures. Let me know if you do! I can send out more in following newsletters if I can find out more info. ~Kerry from Bali :)
