Ive been a strong supporter of the powerful benefits of using Oregano essential oil for certain medical applications topically and internally, and have always wondered what the difference was between 100% pure Oregano essential oil and oil of Oregano that is marketed for internal use (complete with tincture dropper for easy application into mouth or glass of juice to mix it with). the price differences are extreme, the oil of oregano is typically only 25% essential oil diluted with a carrier like olive oil and is sold for up to $75 , while the essential (non diluted 100% pure) is sold for $10-15, sometimes more depending on the brand and company producing it. The lady at the Berkeley Bowl nutrition department said she was using oregano essential oil and diluting it herself for any internal applications when needed and informed customers they could do the same. The management apparently told her to stop doing this and that the oregano essential oil wasnt food grade so therefore could not be taken internally and that only the food grade oil of oregano was safe for consumption. I was intrigued and began researching this, and even called the headquarters of a few of the main companies that produce both the 100% essential oil and the more expensive, diluted oil of oregano to find out if the source oil was of a different quality to be labeled food grade. What I found out was there is no grading system for essential oils and the only legal way for them to put food grade on a product containing essential oil is if it is diluted accordingly , usually 20-25% of essential oil with 75-80% olive oil. This means that when you purchase oil of oregano you are not only paying u to 7 times more for the product, you are still getting a fraction of the actual source product that they use to make it , plus a couple tablespoons of olive oil. As the cold and flu season approaches, those who utilize the undeniable healing properties of using Oregano essential oil ( dilute or mix 25% with another liquid if taken internally ) can be assured that for the minimal extra effort involved of cutting it yourself , you are getting the same product. Food grade oil from any plant is just diluted essential oil. Case closed. Heres an example, look at the ingredients of this high priced product, it STILL is not 100% essential oil. People are paying for the safety of knowing that it is safe to take internally, because it is pre-mixed with olive oil.
