Ive been debating on putting this on Facebook. Initially we didnt want to but, given the fact that the holidays are approaching and that most Facebook friends I have are family; I feel its important to share. This is about Caden. If youve been around us for an extended amount of time you may have seen him flap or wave both hands out if excitement. Or seen him do things that just seem odd. Maybe even seen him throw a tantrum for apparently no reason. Well, it turns out there is a reason. He had to go to the school for a screening because he failed the fine motor skills part of a questionnaire I filled out at the doctors office. Right away at the screening the child experts there noticed that he shows signs of sensory processing disorder or SPD. It means hes wired a little differently and he processes his senses not the same way as someone with out this does. Its basically all senses even how he feels. Since he doesnt know how to express himself he throws awful tantrums. If anyone has seen the movie Looper there is a scene when the child starts to loose his temper. Out of fear of her son, the mother runs and hides in a safe to protect herself from him during his tantrum. There are days I feel like this. There are days that I lock my self in the bedroom because I feel I may snap and do something Ill regret. The tantrums have reach an all time high right before the screening. People have said he just needs an old fashion butt whooping. Well Ive done that. Ive done it to the point it feels like child abuse. He simply does NOT respond to it like most kids. Normally if you swat a kid on their backside they stop the bad behavior and thats it. Spanking actually makes it worse for him. His body doesnt process pain like most people. People that have SPD, pain can even feel like pleasure to them. Every since the screening he hasnt had a full blown tantrum. This is the longest streak weve had in a long time and its only been a few days. I think its because Ive been dealing with him a lot differently than I use to. We have to be more patient with him than most kids. His bad behavior is more than likely caused by his condition. We have to go back for an evaluation next week. There well talk to a team of experts that will figure out what type of help he needs to manage this. Before we go back I had to fill out a lot of questionnaires. One was to see if he may have Autism. Because SPD and Autism can be linked together. He doesnt have an official diagnoses for SPD but, he shows all the signs. Almost every example of what SPD is he does. I just wanted to go into great detail on here because we are going to be home for holidays if the weather lets us. While we are at family events if Caden acts up or does something that just seems strange to you please refrain from negative comments, or telling us what we should do with our son (not that I believe anyone would). This is all very new to us and we are learning everything as a family. None of this means that hes mentally retarded or handicap or cant do normal stuff like other kids. In fact they were impressed by how smart he is. It just means he does things differently than other children without SPD or even possibly Autism. To be completely honest I was a little relived to be told that he may have SPD. The reason is because now we have a name for it and now we can get help. Thank you everyone for understanding.
