Ive been nominated for a Los Angeles Press Club National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Award in the Best Feature (Industry & Arts Oriented) category for a piece I co-wrote at The Advocate magazine. The nomination is bittersweet both for the fact that I recently stopped contributing to the site, but also for the simple fact that the works headline -- Is the T Word the New N Word? -- was something I fought against using for the obvious reason of inappropriate comparisons between transphobic discrimination and racial discrimination. While I was not responsible for the pieces title (and went so far as to lodge numerous unsuccessful requests with the outlets editorial staff to change it), I am so very, very proud of my contribution to the feature: one of the interviews and a fair deal of the copy. The headline, however, overshadowed the body of the piece, itself, and led many to label me as racist, claiming I was complicit in the titling. This led me to avoid referencing the piece, as I often felt it had been too tainted by its sensationalistic headline.
