Ive been noticing my Facebook friends in the marching arts all over the country bewildered by results of their recent State Finals competitions. I think what has happened is as marching band has become so increasingly complex and diverse it has rendered fewer people qualified to sample and assess the performances. Its getting difficult to find 6 or 8 people with the depth of experiences to render a unified decision; nonetheless, we are still sailing in the seas of subjectivity. Remember, the focus should be on student growth. Did your students grow? Become better musicians? Moreover, better people? Then, you won, -regardless of the results. I know here at Camp Petal our students grew tremendously and we had fun test driving an experiment of mixing pop music with classical -trying to bridge the gap between competition shows and average football fan entertainment. Regardless of the placements of your bands, check out the DVD of the bands in your state finals. Kids are growing and getting better all over the country! Everyone calm down. Its just band. If youre still bent out of shape, take a deep look at whats motivating that.
