Ive been off the air for nearly two months now and its time for an admission to you. As stated in my forecast posting, what youre about to read may profoundly change the way you think about me. But its been said that The truth will set you free and I feel the pull of freedom. Over the years, many people have come up to me and asked, Hey Gar, how have you been so successful telling the weather on TV for so many years? I would shrug and change the subject and hopefully, avoid having to actually answer the question. But its time to get this off my chest. When on-air TV weather people are standing in front of the green screen, going through the maps and radar and satellite loops, were able to control those images with what we call a clicker. You probably knew that. What you probably didnt know was that those clickers are all actually inflatable. So heres where the revelation comes... Each day, before I went on the air with the clicker, back behind the set where nobody could see me, I would deflate it a bit. Id take just enough air out it that I was able to grip it much more effectively and, ultimately, deliver a confident and accurate forecast. If you will, with my slightly deflated clicker, I would be able to easily throw a meteorological touchdown. Embarrassing? Yes. Unethical? Perhaps. But Im so happy to divulge this information to you. I just hope you can find it in your heart to, some day, forgive me.
