Ive been pondering the different types of shiva calls one can make. There are the ones where you are close with the person who died, but dont know ANY of the relatives well, or at all, and you just show up to let them know you miss your friend and feel badly for them. Then there are the calls you make to your good friends when they lose a parent or other relative whom you have never met. You want to be there for your friend, but cant share their sentiments in ways that make you really empathize, it is more like sympathy. But this week has been different for me. I was at the home of Dovid Winiarz and Miriam Winiarz every day since tragedy struck. It is like losing a part of yourself. I love this family so much, and have for so many years. I share the loss, feel as badly for myself as I do for them, feel badly on behalf of them, and empathize in ways that couldnt even be stronger if I had been blood related. It is heart-wrenching and difficult, inspiring and comforting, all at once. I fear that the difficult work for all of us starts once the shiva comes to an end, in a few hours.
