Ive been reading a ton of philosophy lately. From Fichte, to Hegel, to Kant and a lot specifically on Nietzsche (big surprise). I feel myself coming to different conclusions on college, and to a smaller degree on general education and primary schooling. I feel like almost all of education is totally worthless; people learn more, more potently, for longer periods with more retention when directed by curiosity, over being directed by an authority figure, like a teacher, parent, professor etc. I used to be super against college in a turtles, all the way down kind of way. But I think thats changed lately. Its definitely not for me, but college might serve a purpose for some people, some of the time. Not everyone needs to be a free spirit. Not everyone needs to be an entrepreneur. Some folks might do well in a less autonomous, more structured setting, although I do not wish to incur the costs, intellectually or financially, of that environment. I value my autonomy very highly, but other folks might not so much, and they might prefer the safety net of degrees, accolades, professors, and so on. I do not think the value of college is appraised accurately in todays culture, but I do not think its totally worthless anymore, there is some benefit to it sometimes, with some people.
