Ive been reading the nice, thick guide to the old SimLife game (its a sandbox genetics playground with a STEEP learning curve) ... wonderful book that has introduced me to all kinds of things about biology, evolution, and AI on computers. I wish there were still games made like this ... sigh ... anyways, I just learned what fruit is for in this world. I always wondered why plants would expend so much effort and energy to make tasty things that just plop down to the ground and rot. I thought maybe it was to absorb the impact of the fall, and then provide the seeds with nutrients... Good guess, but wrong. Turns out the fruits are made sweet so that animals will eat them, digesting the seeds and all, and then carry those seeds to - hopefully - a nice location where the seeds will grow. The animal excretes the seeds, which now have a nasty bed of fertilizer with them, and hopefully grow into a new plant. So, if you want to help Mother Nature in this effort, next time you eat a fruit - seeds and all - go take a dump out in a nice location. LOL
