Ive been saying this was going to happen after the majority of Cowhers players were gone. If he were to come back wed be in the playoffs next yr. There is Bill;s high school & college photos. His mom & dad, Dorothy & Laird. and me & his dad. He taught Bill very much about baseball & football. He taught me a lot of baseball. He was my little league coach (1968-70). In my 2nd yr, I was the winning pitcher in the championship game (1969). Mr Cowher warmed me up on the sidelines before that game. He said to me, now give me your fastball. I wound up & fired it in as fast as I could. He reached up with his bare hand caught it one handed without the glove & said to me, come on now, you can throw harder than that. The game before that game in the semi final, we beat his sons Bill & his younger brother Dougs team to knock them aht of the playoffs. Doug was an awesome pitcher & player. Bill was his catcher. Doug was the better athlete. Bill must have had more heart & self motivation to climb to where is is today. The kids of my day were all very baseball / football smart. There is way more thinking & strategy to these games than it is with physical ability. I dont know all the terminology in those advanced complicated NFL playbooks as far as play calling but I do know when it is 3rd down & one, You get one, preferably two. Move those chains. Anyway, to sum it all up...The Cowher Era is over, at least for now & we all are headed into a long sobering season......Heres what I have to say about that GO PENs
