Ive been so busy serving as PTA President of one of the best elementary schools in town that I have not had a lot of time for FB lately. I spend countless hours weekly supporting my school and serving as a public education advocate in the Tulsa community. I have always maintained we cannot give the A-F system any credibility. There are many reasons Janet Barresi was voted out of office in ALL 77 counties in Oklahoma and this flawed system is one of them. This past year, for the first time, students with IEPs (special education) were not given modified tests. That is outrageous and heartbreaking at the same time. Our legislators and governor must be accountable to our schools by making public education funding a priority and stop mandating unfunded reforms and other legislation that diminish public education. This issue is so important, in the past week, the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce OneVoice Task Force voted to make public education funding its top priority for the coming year. Before the current grades were released, I shared this quote on our Lee PTA meeting agenda. I hope you will join me in continuing the fight for public education. All of our futures depend on it. There is a place in America to take a stand: it is public education. It is the underpinning of our cultural and political system. It is the great common ground. Public education after all is the engine that moves us as a society toward a common destiny... It is in public education that the American dream begins to take shape.—Tom Brokaw
