Ive been struggling, a bit, and have suffered from a lot of doubts about my recent decision to return to Merced. Its hard not to accept the argument (and all of the empirical evidence) that this is the worst place in America and that the people here do not have the capacity to move Merced ahead. But, after hearing from friends here who continue to struggle for change and who have not given up hope, Im fired up for another session of beating my head against the wall. And Im still hoping that repeating and renewing my own efforts will eventually lead to a different outcome. Im keeping in mind that the stakes are high for a lot of people; and that those who could benefit from a more healthy community deserve the very best effort by those of us who are more fortunate. I refuse to accept negative feedback and give in to the cant-do crowd. I want to become Sancho Panza or any other part of the entourage. I would be honored to serve a knight-errant who is devoted to a just and moral quest. If anyone out there is ready to lead -- or to also join -- in a quest, I have one in mind...
