Ive been thinking a lot about my last thirty years of teaching - TopicsExpress

Ive been thinking a lot about my last thirty years of teaching guitar. Im nearing 25,000 one to one lessons now, which is a bit frightening. Ive been very lucky, I got into guitar teaching when there were very few professional teachers in South Wales, I was just one of six, maybe. Now theres more like 60, and thats not counting the black economy boys and girls, of which there are many. In a way this might be seen as good, as people have much more choice, but there are many negative aspects to this. On one hand so many people have a go at guitar teaching with no experience and little idea of what they are doing, and on the other hand, young musicians are flooding out of the many music colleges that are around now with impressive looking qualifications but again with no experience of imparting knowledge in a lively and individual way, and often without even any live experience. All trying to scrape a handful of lessons a week-if they are luckily. Prices for guitar lessons havent gone up for many years now with most teachers( including me) because so often newcomers to the scene are offering lessons at ridiculously low prices, but this is very much the case of you get what you pay for. Fortunately I dont have to compete like this because my reputation is long established but I do feel sorry for the handful of good guitar teachers out there who cant get established because there is now a glut of people around who should not be teaching- I know because often I have a new student who has had lessons elsewhere before they come to me, sometimes with a number of different teachers, and have suffered because of the very poor way they are taught. Guitar teaching is being seriously debased, in my opinion, whereas tuition in more traditional instruments such as piano and violin is unaffected, and the prices charged go up consistently so that these teachers are charging £30 + per hour. Guitar tuition has now become cheap, but at what cost, I wonder? Guitar Tuition 1LikeLike ·
