Ive been thinking about book-series endings a lot since last nights catastrophe (AKA, Allegiant). If I had to rate the ones Ive read n recent memory. Id say they all kind of let me down, though in different ways. Be careful reading on if you havent read the series mentioned, because SPOILERS! The Twilight series ending worked fine for me, what I can remember of it. Its been quite a while since I read it. I know some didnt like it, but it didnt bother me. Renesmee! What a great name, said no one ever. Wheel of Time: I would have loved fifty more books in that series. I never wanted it to end. I even liked the slow books where nothing much happened. Those characters are my friends and I enjoyed every minute I spent with them. In the end, certain character deaths disappointed me. The very, very, very end left me feeling a little unsatisfied, but not dissatisfied. I certainly didnt feel betrayed. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay was my all time most hated series ending until yesterday. Prim! Prim! Why, why, why???? (You cant kill Gale enough times to satisfy me, BTW. I hated his guts from page 1.) Harry Potter: This one felt right to me. But the truth is, I cant love a book that ends a series I want to continue forever. Some felt that Harrys nondeath was a cop out. I think J.K. might have wanted him to bite the dust but realized there were 100 million people who would burn her in effigy if she did that. I still think Harry shoulda ended up with Hermione, though. The Lost Fleet: This is a military SF series few of my followers here will be familiar with. Cardboard characters? Weve got ship loads of them. Who cares? Addictive and satisfying formula, book after book. Try/fail cycles? No way. Weve got a string of try/succeed cycles. Loved every book, though theyre all the same. The series ended well. And then . . . it continued with a new series with the same characters and the same formula. Hurray! The Undermountain Saga: An important character sacrifices himself, but he needed redeeming anyway. Overall, I thought the final book, Starkiller, was awesome.
