Ive been watching several tutorials on proper gain staging, but all of their source material is laid back music. Some are keeping their track levels around -18db, some at -12 or -10. The results are very clean, but again the source material is chill. My question is for mixing metal, punk, etc. What is your rule of thumb for good gain staging powerful music? Ive been applying their techniques and experimenting along the way. I love the cleanliness of -10, but -6 sounds so rip your face off powerful. Anywho, just curious where you gain stage when working with loud music.
