Ive been watching some of his old stand-up for the past few hours. Just too shocked beyond words to have let the grief really soak in yet. But finally, seeing him so youthful. So manic. Its like he rarely knew where the bit was leading half the time himself. Just diving head first like a man possessed. But occasionally you slip up going through the material that fast and intensely and, being as quick witted as he was, would make a quick joke at his own expense and then move the routine along. Then I notice another quirk of his. The voices. He was not only great at doing voices, but he greatly relied on them. If a joke bombed, bit dragged on, or his coke-addled lack of attention span sunk in...he would start doing a completely different vocal character at a drop of a hat to keep the show moving and get a quick laugh. The self-deprecating quick jab and the misdirecting vocal work. If you know me at all, you know those two things are the foundations of my own humor and delivery. They are character traits I notice in myself and I know other people see it too. And now, of all times, I realize where I learned that from...Robin. He wasnt just some schmuck actor I admired since I was kid. Robin Williams kind of helped formed the person I am today.
