Ive felt privileged to encounter loads of lovely midwives this week….at two births I attended, and then last night at the tellmeagoodbirthstory screening of Microbirth. What a downright pleasure it is to hear about as well as feel firsthand people who know how to do their job so beautifully….like Esme who tiptoed in to SLs birth at home and though the baby was pretty imminent, brought nothing in the door that might disturb - no adrenaline at all, no extra energy that might have altered the deep calm quiet that had helped the baby to come so easily in the first place. And then her amazing back-up….Angela….the kind of midwife everyone should have, who told me that at births, she just sits quietly letting the mothers shes supporting find their way…and late on Friday night, during Es labour, a dead practical but infinitely empowering midwife who kept a steady face and saw off Es doubts with a reassuring shrug…and then last night, in our audience so many more….all in possession I could tell just by meeting them of that most precious of midwife powers - knowing how to make women feel good and big and strong within themselves…not taking the birth from them, or telling them what to do, or coming on the expert. Hats off to you you dedicated lovely ladies. PROPERLY heartening.
