Ive gotten criticized by a few reviewers for using The Message in my books. Fair enough. Its to be expected, and Im really okay if people disagree with me...But heres the thing: writers, pastors and teachers use different translations for different reasons. (BTW, MSG is a paraphrase; but its also a very thoroughly studied-for-years, prayed-over-by-Eugene-Peterson and taken from the original languages paraphrase). Sometimes, we are so used to hearing the Word in a certain way that we get callous to the real meaning or to something new and fresh God might want us to hear through the scripture. I know that I can let the words slide over my mind and not even enter my heart because Ive heard that particular group of words together so often. One thing I love about the MSG version is that can slap me in the face right when I need it. And that is a VERY good thing! What versions of scriptures are your favorites, and why? Do you use different translations for different types of study/reading? Id love to hear from you about this...
