Ive had two emotional moments since the Today Show revealing. The first was when I got back to the hotel and freaked out because I thought the reason I was chosen over Finny and Kavan was for my injuries alone. Those guys are remarkable. I was, and still am, so impressed with them and I honestly couldnt fathom winning over either guy. In fact, Finny was the one that talked me off that ledge. What an amazing man he is. I dont know why I was chosen over those two well-deserving men, but I was, and for that I am so thankful. My second emotional moment happened today. I received a voicemail from a marine who is also a double amputee. He wanted to congratulate me on the cover and my success and how well I represent the military. I knew there were veterans groups that voted and were excited about my win, but it never really hit me that I could be positively effecting a fellow injured veteran. The moment I heard his message, I have to admit, my eyes filled with tears (which I quickly brushed away because I cant afford to mess up my street cred). In the world of magazines, this Mens Health issue may not be that big of a deal, but if the picture of me on the cover inspires just one veteran, or any person, who sees their injuries as something that holds them back, if it causes their self perspective to change and see that what may seem like a setback can absolutely be transformed into a comeback, it will be a very big deal. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity.
