Ive just had three fantastic days. On the first two days (Nov. 4-5) I reunited with fellow alumni at a reunion and theological conference with about 100 of my Princeton Seminary brothers and sisters. The event was held at the beautiful San Marino Presbyterian Church in San Marino (near Pasadena). Theological round tables were taught by some of the worlds best scholars and attendees were a Whos Who of Princeton Seminary graduates including Dale Bruner (author of THE FINEST commentary -- two volumes -- on Romans and another matchless treatment of Johns Gospel), Darrell Guder (one of the first definers and clarifiers of the term missional church) and Donn Moomaw (formerly Ronald Reagans pastor at Bel Air Presbyterian Church and a UCLA college football Hall of Famer). We also met the new Princeton Seminary President, Dr. Craig Barnes, who impressed us all greatly. Then today (Nov. 6) I was privileged to accept a special invitation to attend the installation of new Fuller Seminary President, Dr. Mark Labberton. I scarcely have words to do justice to the magnificence of the service. The music, the international focus, and the address delivered by Dr. Labberton were transcendent (Really!). Ill be writing an article soon for ASSIST NEWS SERVICE about these powerful events and the historic developments taking place in tandem at these two important seminaries, both of whom exert massive influence on Chrisitanity around the world. For someone like me, involved as i have been for many years in ministry and theological education and with attachments to both institutions, these three days were a kind of Super Bowl experience. Its good to be alive and to witness God at work in and through his Church. And, oh yes, I also give thanks for Duke Divinity School where I have been instructed and inspired beyond measure by faculty and spirit that are second to none!
