Ive just sent this to the Today programme because I am very (any expletive you like) angry and Twitter is too short and predictable.. I have just listened to the interview with the Israeli spokesman in which he was allowed to claim that the violence in Palestine and Israel is entirely due the the policies of Hamas. While the interviewer brought up though hardly pursued the situation in Gaza, there was no reference made to the illegal settlement building, the forced removal of Palestinians from their homes and the blatant disregard by Israel for international law. It has been said many times by the Palestinians that those are the issues that need resolving. He might also have used the spokesmans raising of the Gaza rockets debate to inform the listeners that, while all loss of life is to be regretted, less than thirty people have died from those rockets since they started, fewer than the number of children killed in Lebanon by Israel in 1986. The earlier interview with the Palestinian was chaotic, presumably as the speaker wanted to make the most of his rare opportunity to inform the British people of the true situation of his people. Humphries just tried to get an answer to what in the circumstances turned out to be a fairly puerile question. I really thought that the later interview would seek some justification for the settlement building or even press the spokesman about the suggestion of an International body to oversee the situation. The spokesman however was allowed to brush that off without any discussion. While I try not to read bias into everything I read or hear, the BBC is going well towards justifying the claim by several groups that it is pro-Zionist and untruthful. What I can say is that since Today has introduced the light-hearted banter between its presenters, it has lost its reputation as a serious news programme and those sloppy excuses for interviews are what we are coming to expect from it. What would Paxman have done with them?
