Ive just written about Mrs Mansfield retiring in 1941, having begun at the school in 1914. The only Mrs. Mansfield i ever knew was in Year 6 in 1964. She was great but not the original one. I wonder if they were related? Actually I havent proof read it, or considered modification, but Ill post the last 3 paras of the era ending in 1951. There were three defining events, which happened in the 1940s, symbolically separating the initial Underdale School era from its Flinders Park Primary School successor. The first occurred on March 24th 1941, when there was a ‘Farewell to Mrs. Mansfield’ evening. Present and past teachers, parents and pupils gathered in the Flinders Park Hall on Grange Road to eat, drink, dance and say thank you to Mrs. Edith Mansfield who had been a teacher since those far off days of 1914, when the world was not so very far from the innocent place it had been before August of that year. She had made great contributions in terms of organization, innovation and performance, both as a teacher and as a community member. From the first she had earned and maintained an excellent reputation as a teacher. The second occurred on March 22nd 1944, when it was noted that there was an extraordinary vacancy on the School Committee created by the sudden death of Mr. William Henry Figg. The school had been his life. The land upon which it had been established had been his lucerne farm. The Figg family children had attended the school. During their time as pupils there and long after they left, the official and unofficial acts of kindness on the part of Mr. Figg and his wife provided very important practical assistance and pioneered that generosity of the spirit of giving so important to how a school community should operate. The third event seems to have passed almost unnoticed. In 1948, the year that Don Bradman’s Australian cricket team rolled invincibly through the hallowed grounds of the United Kingdom, sweeping all before them, Underdale School became Flinders Park Primary School.
