Ive lost absolutely all faith in humanity. So the Mare I posted about yesterday was apparently dumped Thursday for the auction on Friday. In her condition and being blind (in at least 1 eye) she was a no sale and was put in a back pen to wait to be put down. When we found her yesterday her spirits were up and she nickered at us a couple times. We knew theyd give her away in a heartbeat rather than spend $ on a vet & rendering plant. We were hoping to find someone that would take a chance on her or at least give a graceful ending. She had a look to her that said she wasnt done. We went to take her some food this morning, but at least 5 days with no food took its toll. She was down with her head caught in a fence and her face ripped up. We pulled her out & tried to make her comfortable. The sale barn owner said a vet was supposed to have put her down yesterday & obviously didnt show. We stayed with her for over 2.5 hours just holding her head & trying to keep her quiet. She just kept fighting. After what felt like eternity a vet came. He was cold & put her down fast, but we stayed with her. The worst part is that this isnt a special case. Every single time Ive been to that auction, theyve sent 2-3 no sales back to wait god only knows how long to die. Most commonly the blind & crippled, anything that would be too difficult to transport to Canada. Then theres the horrible people that dump these horses during the week with no food, leaving them to wait for sale day. As were holding her while she thrashes & fights for life, less than 50 feet away people are piling out if their cars to enjoy the Shipshewana food & flea market, totally oblivious. Absolutely sickening.
