Ive seen a lot of posts about Chris Kyle lately and I wont speak to the person because I did not know him. We know he was a great seal. We know he told lies in his book. The heated arguments that arise come about because we cannot reconcile the two. I admire courage and sacrifice. I admire honor. This does not mean I have to admire a book or a movie. This does not mean I have to admire war in general or those that wage it. As long as war has existed, we have forgiven soldiers of the necessary evils they have committed. I emphasize necessary. And so I pay the respect a soldier is due. The respect that comes from a lack of understanding. The respect that is paid from guilt. The respect that is paid to hard men. I cannot call them all heroes. I cannot pretend that their cause is always just. The great hypocrisy I see is from those who defend men with guns and call themselves true patriots, while simultaneously deriding those who would rather not send them. To attack the purpose of war is not the same as attacking the vehicle of it. Conservatives praise the soldiers and attack the president. Praise our freedom and then work to dismantle it. What are you defending? I would argue that this is the defense of willful ignorance. This is the defense of fear.
