Ive seen a number of critical comments lately related to the ALS - TopicsExpress

Ive seen a number of critical comments lately related to the ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease) Ice Bucket Challenge. Some criticisms relate to the need to give rather than being pushed into nonsensical activity (valid point, though Champaign had a heat index of 108 today...). Others criticize the waste of water while people in some areas lack this vital resource. Still others wish that people were more giving in general. Heres my take: 1. If this gimmick brings attention to this horrible disease and leads to increased contributions (both true) then more power to them! I would imagine that a huge number of people whove never heard of ALS know a bit more now. 2. Yup, it wastes water. So does leaving your tap on while you brush your teeth, not finishing that glass of water, buying prewashed veggies, having a pool, taking a shower each day (not REALLY a necessity), etc. In short, doing away with the ALS ice bucket challenge is, at most, a molecule-sized drop in the HUGE bucket of our daily water waste. AND...it brought $ to a charity in need. 3. Yes, we can ALL give more. Lets keep in mind that the US was ranked as the most giving country last year by the Charities Aid Foundation: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Giving_Index However, most of us CAN DO more. My point is this: instead of picking on this ALS fundraiser, get out your credit card or set some time aside. Do some research. Find a charity you like. Give. You might give money. You might give time. You might give both. (And you might get ice bucketed in the process!)
