Ive spent the day down inside the Mamertine Prison in Rome where Peter and Paul were kept before their executions ordered by Nero. They would have been lowered through this very hole by a rope into the dank, cold, filthy, rat-infested pit. Every now and then Im blessed with a surreal experience of feeling that the fictional scenes I write surrounding real events are perhaps the way it really happened. I decided to put Peter and Paul together as they each penned their last words. And maybe, just maybe, I was given the imagery of what that scene actually looked like. Tomorrow, Peter will be crucified upside down in Neros Circus (where the Vatican stands today), and Paul will be beheaded three miles outside of Rome on the Ostian Way. Sad, yes, but in a split second theyll be together again in heaven, and greeted with the applause of nail-scarred hands.
