Ive stayed up way too long and sipped on way too much wonderful single malt Scotch, Laphroaig by name. Yet here I am. If you do not know of this gem, let me tell you a brief story. Some decades ago, a young man, who was a cousin to the recent bride of a close friend of mine, was arriving stateside, for a visit. He was the son of an ambassador from Great Britain. He had lived all around the world as he followed his dads postings. He had the status of courier for Her Majestys Foreign Office. My host, the husband of the new wife, was a close relative of his. My friend had been advised to have some Laphroaig on hand for sipping. And so began a love affair with a single malt Scotch. For most of us, the encounter with players in another world is both a surprise and a delight. This young man was an individual you could only desire as a son or son in law. He was beyond cool! He was simply there! He did not put on any airs. He was happy to be with you, would be continuing his adventures, delighted in telling stories of what he had done, and enjoyed his time with you, at the moment. You could only love him, or hate him, but the latter had no standing. He had seen people that he knew shot down in foreign countries where his father had been posted. As you began to understand this, as best you could, the world took on a different reality. He delighted in spending time as a camp counselor in various sites in the realm of Great Britain. Often these were in Canada. His heritage was as a soccer player. The discipline he described was daunting to anything we knew. One of the exercises was to carry your mate, on your back, up and down the stairs in the stadium in which you played. I cant begin to imagine doing that. He also took a fiendish delight in driving security systems over the edge during processing at airports. This was prior to 9/11 for the record. After he had set off some degree of chaos, he would produce his passport and courier status, and any problems would evaporate, instantly. I have no idea where he is now or what he is doing, but whenever I sip Laphroaig, I think of him.
