Ive stewed today. I left the post office after listening to young moms chat about their kids football and sports career. They did indeed call it a career! they were ages 6,9, and 12. Lol. I came home and homeschooled and have finished and Im quietly sitting and stewing so I here comes my blog!!! For those that annoys just stop reading now! What the heck is wrong with being average? In todays world people are compared, scored, measured, graded and totally evaluated. Im totally not a competitive person so maybe this is why I feel this way. I do think some competiton can be healthy but its not for me personally. I tend to stray away from it totally even as a child. Idk why but I do. Competition is so high today! There are winners and losers. Needless to say most anyone would rather be on the winning side but lets face it there can only be one winner. So what is wrong with mediocracy I ask? After all, majority of us are just your average people, people who do well but not globally or even non globally excel in anything that we would be given recognition for by others that do not know us. I think things have changed since I was a kid. It all is or I should say seems to me to be so much more serious. Whether its sports, grades, SOLs, SATs, GPAs for college, piano or acting class ect... It just seems like its now more important to have our children attain perfection. I believe in self improvement, I believe in striving to attain a higher goal, I believe we should always learn and apply that learning but I dont think it is healthy to strive for perfection. Perfection is beyond me and all people. Not possible. Whats wrong with sports for the exercise and fun of it. Whats wrong with piano because you enjoy it and it relaxes you, whats wrong with painting and not covering every inch perfectly. Im guilty of it as well. What is wrong with us! How could only say to our children before a game Have Fun and say nothing more at the end than did you have fun?. Or Play hard and at the end no more than IM PROUD. Not too many can, but we should. Our young children today are out there practicing too much striving for perfection, striving for that everything to win motto. Children are benched for missing a practice. Lighten up, people! I though it was suppose to be for some fun and exercise! I dont think young children and teens can possibly have as much fun as we did and our parents did as kids. They cant. they cant feel the same about themselves bc of all the grading, measuring and comparing. Whats wring with being mediocre? The bible tell us we al have been given certain talents in different measure. Mine different from yours as day is from night. We have forgotten this in the scheme of things. We erase that individuality thinking when we need and have our children constantly striving to excel! Some will not put forth any effort to try a new skill just bc they do not feel they can attain a certain amount of proficiency. Well im just average, maybe even below average and Im tellin ya we do not have attain proficiency or perfection if we enjoy what we are doing. It s a reason I pulled Jack out to homeschool and why he does not even want to play basketball this yr bc he knows he stinks at it and he knows its not going to be fun or no one will give him the ball bc of it. It breaks my heart. This is a lesson not getting across to our youngsters as they seem to try to be and do almost everything well. It is a prescription for going batty and ending up with a terrible set of nerves for the rest of your life. I think we should go back to more un scheduled time for our kids. We did so much more of following our inclinations after we did hw and chores. How will they learn what they like or what they are good at if at such a young age all their time is scheduled out for them. Whats wrong with letting them become Jacks of all trades. A man can do anything he sticks his mind to, but is a master of none! I love it! I want my children to try their hands at whatever they like and not worry about mastering it completely just enjoy the journey. We may not be able to brag about them. Bc who brags about being average only winning. Its wrong. Who brags about their childs special needs. I do. Im so proud to be raising average kids!!! They are extraordinary at kindness, generosity, and love! They are flexible and adaptable. Now that is something to brag about! The next time someone asks me how my kids are doing in school Im gonna proudly say they are average students and I hope they are learning to be good citizens of their community and developing great coping skills. Parents should also start cutting themselves a break. Im always thinking to myself and want to tell my friends. Let it go !!! You dont have to do something more. Between work, sports events, fundraising, advocating, supporting every cause it is ok to give yourselves a break! I can tell you average for me is happily, perfectly, thankfully normal. Whats so wrong with that? Maybe that is just it: my cause, my raison Detre. I am an advocate for average! I am a voice for all the wonderfully average ladies and kids out in the world struggling to feel valid in a sea of causes, campaigns and celebrities. My life, my average life, is something important and worth fighting for. My life is average: not ONLY mundane, common, boring, ordinary but extraordinary, magnificent, exciting beautiful and wonderful. I am now a new advocate for AVERAGE. It is a wonderful, cause worthy of advocacy. To all the women and children out their struggling with the middle or even below, our lives may not be extraordinary, but they are lives worth celebrating, documenting, and remembering. We are not below anyone! Get out their friends in your minivans with your average 2.5 kids and designer dogs and raise awareness for average! Be an advocate for your own, wonderfully middling life. Speak out in Thanksgiving to God and women in the middle everywhere! We are average and we are happy. So lets let our children be too. We all need to cut a big toot and relax and enjoy the world God has given us!
