Ive thought about this time and time again and I keep coming up - TopicsExpress

Ive thought about this time and time again and I keep coming up with the same bottom line. We dont really execute that many people. I can only assume capital punishment is a form of fear tactic designed to scare people out of committing vicious crimes. This seems logical, though the data shows it is somewhat ineffective. I actually happen to agree that a death sentence is preferable in certain cases. My eye for an eye scenario only exists if someone purposefully and and intentionally kills another human being. This purports the perpetrator has lost the complete capacity to find significance in life. If one loses that particular capacity that wholly, they are beyond a sane societal salvation. A knowing reverence for the importance of life is the glue that holds civility from crumbling. Weve come too far to collectively allow and support such dismissive behavior. On a related note, Id like to talk about the ridiculous amount of individuals being incarcerated (private prison is big business now, dont you know: https://aclu.org/prisoners-rights/private-prisons) with smaller crimes and longer sentences. The bigger this business is allowed to grow, the more stimulated the states will be to make punishment more severe and lock up times longer. I am almost certain that capital punishment will be a thing of the barbaric past within the next 5-10 years. Not because of moral inclinations but because businesses need customers. Much like big pharma profits on the sick but not quite dead, private prisons do the same. They will pay off the right lobbyists/politicians/lawyers to ensure the survival of their inmates and in turn, ensure the survival of their business. This fast growing and ethically alarming trend of free enterprise choosing profit over people is a far more troubling topic to me than the fact that we (with sufficient evidence) still decide to (in very sparse numbers) give a few bad apples a taste of their own rot. Excerpt post of mine on a death penalty discussion for a govt. class Im taking. I decided this will be my last go at college and Im going to just write about whatever I feel like writing about instead of half-heartedly, regurgitating textbook material like I did five years ago. Im giving all my professors a heads up at the beginning of the semester letting them know I intend to think a bit differently and explore scenarios and tangents more than the source itself. This is how I learn best. Several As later, Im feeling beyond hopeful. I will make the system work for me, yet! My money, my education.
