Ive told this story about my brother Brandon and me several times because I think its important to understanding compromise. Im older than Brandon by twenty one months, but he was always tall for his age. When we were kids, I maintained a slight physical advantage. That was great because when you fight with your little brother about a toy, a game, clothes, or anything else, it always ends the same way--with you pounding knots in your little brothers noggin. This all changed when I was almost 17 and he had just turned 15. We got into an argument before school about a shirt. Things proceeded in their usual fashion, and we duked it out--only this time he pummeled me. Well, that was the last time we fought. We could have kept tearing each other up over disagreements; heck, maybe Id have even won a few more. We recognized we were better off working together, even if that meant neither one of us gets everything we want, and if we had to fight, it ought to be side by side for our common interests. So it goes for Minnesota. The population has shifted, and we should recognize that, while different parts of the state have different needs and challenges, were stronger working together for our common interests. And if we have to fight? Lets fight those Sconnies.
