Ive written before about Strange Fruit, and Billie Holidays trademark performance of it may well be the most disquieting American song of the 20th Century. Its interesting that a central element of The Hunger Games trilogy employs something similar, a simple, nearly-a cappella song written to echo it. How many viewers will get the reference? The entire series draws from influences as diverse as ancient Greek and Roman mythology to news coverage of the Vietnam and Iraq wars, so it makes sense that the key song sung by the heroine would be a strophic ballad that would not be out of place at any time during the past half-millennium.
