Ive written before about the joys of SCUBA diving. Im often asked if it can be done easily in Punta Cana without too much time away from the all inclusive resorts. It is most frequent that one of a couple dives. It is somewhat rare to see both a couple diving together. It seems to be an acquired taste. Most who try it, love it. Its getting over the fear of the unknown. There is really nothing to be afraid of. Most of the over 100 resorts in Punta Cana have a water sports hut on the premises, usually located on the beach.....what a surprise. ;) Using the company right on site is the easiest. They will pick you up in a small boat right at the beach of your resort. The only time this hasnt been the case for me was when I stayed at the more northern resorts, like Excellence. The water is usually too rough up there, even for swimming. At those places, they will transport you over land to a boat to go diving. The water at Hard Rock is also often not swimmable, even since they built the protective jetty. You need to stay from Royalton (just north of the Majestic properties) or south to be assured that you can be picked up on the beach. Most of the dive spots are within 15-20 minutes by boat to the dive spots. For deeper dives, you would have to take an over land transport to a further spot to get a boat to take you to a dive spot. Having to take over land transport can add significantly to the price, percentagewise. Today I post a short video of me being picked up right on the beach of Majestic Elegance by Mariana Caribbean Sports. The boat is like a large row boat, but with an outboard motor. There are never too many divers because of the small size of the boat. You usually are diving with people from other resorts. There will be at least a boat operator and a dive master with you. You get yourself equipped at the water sports hut before the boat arrives. They assist you with getting the tank into the boat, if you want them to. They check all of your equipment and settings. They bring you back to the same beach. Not surprisingly, Majestic Colonial uses the same dive company. They couldnt make it easier for you. Watching the video brings back fond memories for me of many pleasant dives.
