I’M NO EXPERT ON SNOW REMOVAL, but every time we have a major snowfall we seem to face the disruption as though it has never happened before. Visitors to New York City from cities like Rochester or Minneapolis, who measure their own snowfalls in feet rather than inches, laugh at us and say that back home, streets are clear and things are back to normal within 24 hours. We never fail to get complaints from one section of the city or another. Understood that New York’s 6,000 miles of streets may be a unique challenge, nevertheless, wouldn’t it make sense to hire a retired snow-removal supervisor from one of those northern cities to study our current approach, and let us take a fresh look at the comments and recommendations we get? As Fiorello LaGuardia once said, “There is no Republican or Democratic way of cleaning the streets.”
