I’d like to coin a new phrase, “Death, taxes and health insurance.” I do not like the healthcare system, nor do I carry health insurance. I don’t trust big medicine. I don’t trust big pharmaceutical. I don’t trust big insurance. However, now that I MUST carry health insurance by 2014, let’s review. Work-sponsored health insurance for me and my family… absolute lowest plan: $656 with a $1000 deductible through Kaiser. When we opted out years ago, I was paying about $850 per month… plus dental. If you think $1000 a month is affordable on a single income (or even double), please let me know. 2014 insurance through Oregon’s health exchange… absolute lowest plan $479 with a $5000 deductible through Moda. $454 of that would be covered by a federal tax credit (estimated). Monthly out of pocket $38.
