I’m hoping all my facebook friends will add their input to this question/debate. First off, a disclaimer: If you are planning on reading Dan Brown’s “Inferno”, don’t read any further as this will contain spoilers. So as mentioned, I have read a book called “Inferno”. In it, a Dante enthusiast, and genetic engineering mastermind, presents the case that overpopulation is leading to an inevitable collapse of society. He posits that the WHO (World Health Organization) recognizes the issue but does not take extreme enough measures to combat the issue (they give out free condoms, educate, etc). As such, he creates a plague that our protagonist is trying to prevent from being released. As it turns out, the plague is actually a vector virus which can alter your DNA. With this particular strain, the virus manifests itself in approximately 30% of the population. Those people become sterile and unable to reproduce. The virus continues to further generations with the same 30% of the population being unable to reproduce. So my question is: If this were possible, would support the release of a such a virus? It would essentially create a lottery system for having children and effectively solve almost all major world problems. I’m assuming we all agree that overpopulation is the cause of most problems we face today. If not, feel free to present your case. Please also explain why or why not you’d support or be against the virus. Thanks and I’m looking forward to lots of responses!
