I’m often asked how I decide which speakers to invited to the Ventura County Writers’ Weekend coming up November 2 & 3. As a writer, I first consider what topics I want to learn more about and then find the people creating the best social media, editing, the best writing workshops. I consider who are the top regional writers and publishing professionals who are creating the best results. Then the choice is easy – I ask the best I have met at industry events, or recommended by others’ whose judgment I trust. During the VC Writers’ Weekend I act as moderator for most sessions, thus I’m privileged to ask questions and listen to the best people in southern California’s vast publishing arena. And so are all attending because I make sure there is at least 30 minutes at the end of each session for questions. There is a little over two weeks remaining for you to sign up to hear and speak with many top pros coming to speak and answer your questions. Considering these four dynamic speakers: Stephen Smoke, CEO of Independent Book Marketing Group and author of over 31 books (including 20 novels) published by New York houses including HarperCollins and Warner Books. He understands new media and how to use it to enhance and promote books. He has worn both hats, successful author and successful book marketer. Stephen will be on the Building Your Author Platform panel on Sunday. B.J. Robbins, literary agent who began her career in the Publicity Department at Simon & Schuster and move to Harcourt, where she was Director of Marketing and then Senior Editor. In 1992, she started her own literary agency in Los Angeles. B.J. understands what it takes to get a book sold to a legacy house and is in daily contact with New York houses so she knows what they are buying and is looking for authors with great books. B.J. is on our Agent panel. Shelly Lowenkopf held executive editorial positions with a wide range of book publishers, where he saw over 700 titles to market. Lowenkopf taught courses in short story, novel, dramatic writing, editing, genre fiction, and revision at the graduate level at USC, where he was given a Lifetime Teaching Award for his 30 years of service. He has published over 35 works of fiction and nonfiction. Shelly works as an editor with new and established authors to refine their manuscripts into crisp, distinctive voices that publishers want. Shelly teaches the half-day session The Big Writers Sandbox on Saturday morning. Deborah Daly was art director for Thomas Nelson Publishers, Inc. and St. Martins Press in New York before moving to Los Angeles in 1986. She became art director for three more publishers in Los Angeles--the most notably Jeremy P. Tarcher, Inc. She is the principal designer of Daly Design, a graphic design firm in Venice, California and the winner of numerous design awards, including two One Show gold medals. Deborah is speaking as part of the half-day seminar on The Fundamental of Self-Publishing. And there are 13 more speakers you will want to hear. Our weekend cost is affordable and open to everyone interested in becoming a successful writer. Please consider attending. Several sessions are close to sold out. Learn more.
