I’m selling this beautiful Martin D41 guitar for my friend, Duncan McCrone. Its Serial Number 507968 indicates that it was built in 1991 and for a guitar that is 23 years old it is in excellent condition. It has all the positives you would expect from a mature classic, Martin and hardly any of the negatives normally associated with guitars this age. The sound is huge rich and yet detailed enough for strumming lightly or aggressively and finger picking in a gentle or robust way. It basically copes with anything you want it to do in the way that a new guitar, no matter what make or how well made, can do. The action is comfortably light to suit Duncan’s playing style and, if the guitar was mine, I may have got the action adjusted higher (there’s the ability and plenty of scope for that). It’s obvious that, in its 23 years, it would pick up a few dings and signs of wear. Viewed from 6 ft, only two areas of wear on the top are only visible, but only if you know where to look. From any further, the guitar looks perfect. The frets show very little sign of wear and the original gold finish tuning heads that adorn the luxury headstock work perfectly. The abalone inlays on the ebony fingerboard are stunning. On the back of the neck there are a few light surface scratches. The sides are 99% pristine and the back shows less belt and button rash than you would expect on a guitar this age. The guitar will be sold with its original case and paperwork. A new D41 would cost at least £3200 and a new HD28 (structurally very similar but without the bling) would be around £2150. However, it would take years for them to sound as good as this. We think that £2399 would be a fair price, please PM me or Duncan McCrone if you might be interested.
