I’m sure I speak for many local residents when I say it’s disappointing that the Woolworths development at Gordonvale may be delayed, now set to start construction in 2015. Mr Moller’s position on this issue appears somewhat confused. In the past he has been on the record expressing reservations about the development, but now he’s concerned that it’s not happening fast enough? I have consistently supported more shopping choice for Gordonvale residents, including an additional supermarket option. The Gordonvale community is growing fast and the demand is already there for a second supermarket when you factor in Goldsborough and include other smaller communities south to Babinda. Many local people I speak have told me they currently do absolutely no shopping in Gordonvale. If even some of those people do their speciality shopping in the Gordonvale CBD as an offshoot of not just doing their main basket shop at Mt Sheridan or Stockland, it will mean some more customers for local traders. A Woolworths at Gordonvale will improve the chances of another wave of residential growth - again more people and increasing the size of the pie. If estimates by Woolworths that a Gordonvale store will employ around 200 local residents are correct, then that means we may see more money in our town’s economy overall. I continue to support this development because it would mean more jobs closer to home, particularly for young people from Gordonvale. I will seek a meeting with Woolworths to get a detailed briefing on the group’s reasons for the delay.
