I’m sure that I am in college with a half ass 9th grade - TopicsExpress

I’m sure that I am in college with a half ass 9th grade education from Colombia. I am sure that I did not learn anything at all in U.S. high school, except for my ABCFTYZs (something like that), at least nothing good enough for college. “Thanks ESL for taking valuable time away from classes that did matter: economics, algebra, history, etc… Also, thanks CTC for selling me the lower class dream (lots of bills and less than $20 an hour; no vacations; “DON’T even dream with traveling abroad”). I think that as the real minority here (first generation migrant/ fresh off the boat), the American high school system sees you as the statistics that would fill those difficult under-paying jobs, or prison cells. Therefore, schools (at least mine) will guide you to fulfill that Hispanic statistic of poverty and under education, hoping that you turn out to be someone that does not steal their stuff, or does not mess up their order at the Olive Garden. They don’t really see the value of a brain = a brain and a person = person. Although, there are many fingers to point, the causes of these issues are so deep in the roots of North American culture that there is no way to fix them any time soon. Stereotypes aren’t really just labels; they have become the status quo. When it comes to me, I’ll keep doing me regardless of any stereotype, and if for some reason I fill in a stupid statistic, who the hell cares; they are just the numbers. I have already beaten so many of those that if I have a cookie for every single one of them, I would be looking for milk.
