I’m working on a senior “capstone” seminar for the spring - TopicsExpress

I’m working on a senior “capstone” seminar for the spring quarter on Arthur Rimbaud and his influence on various art forms (mostly poetry), both in English-language and other cultures in or near North America. This is what I’ve come up with so far. Any suggestions would be helpful, especially concerning Caribbean, Mexican or Chicano writing (only work thats been translated so I can follow along). Critical essays would be helpful. The title is inspired by Charles Bernstein’s essay “The Poetics of the Americas,” which we will read in class. This is just a sketch! The last two sessions (we have 10-week quarters) will be given over to student presentations. I’m hoping that Spanish and French majors can take the class (not sure if our capstone seminars are restricted to English majors, but many of our English majors are native Spanish speakers). Readers of Spanish and French will be encouraged to discuss the works in their original languages. I originally conceived this as a class for graduate students but, wtf, we have smart undergraduates and I bet they’ll like it. I wont get to teach a graduate-level course until next year and Im impatient. Purely for your interest... “Rimbaud and the Poetics of the Americas” Week 1: Introduction Charles Bernstein, “Poetics of the Americas” (send out beforehand) Gilles Deleuze, “What is a Minor LIterature?” (send out beforehand) Kamau Brathwaite, History of the Voice (send out beforehand) Introduction to Surrealism — lecture Review in class essays by Badiou, Rexroth, Benjamin, Adorno, etc. concerning Rimbaud.
